About the Company:

crowdSPRING is a little company with big dreams based in Chicago - one of the greatest cities in the world. Founded by Ross Kimbarovsky and Mike Samson, crowdSPRING was started to help people from around the world access creative talent, and to help creatives from across the globe find new customers.

With backgrounds in both the creative industry and law, crowdSPRING is a labor of love for a team that believes strongly in the creative process and the protection of intellectual property. We left no stone unturned - from free, binding legal contract generation for every transaction and advanced digital watermarking to a built-in, secure escrow service and a feedback rating system - we tried to make a safe environment for both Buyers and Creatives alike.

By helping Buyers reach countless creatives across the globe, we're changing the game for the little guy. Now small businesses, one-man shops and individuals anywhere can tap into a global pool of creatives. In fact, we're so convinced that global talent pool will give your project new ideas, different perspectives and a far better final product - we guarantee it.

And, by helping creatives reach a new, global market for their creativity, we hope to challenge the current thinking on where great ideas come from. The truth is that a great idea can come from anyone, anywhere - whether they're a janitor by day and a designer by night or a stay-at-home mom who doesn't have the time to run her own web studio. crowdSPRING makes geography and title irrelevant and, thereby, opens new markets for creativity all the world over.

The ideal candidate:

We want you. We need you. You … you can complete us.

We’re looking for the kind of engineer that does it for the love of it. Maybe it’s embarrassing how many github repos you’re following. Maybe you’ve started a social network for Beanie Baby owners … in 2009. Whatever, we won’t judge. We’re just excited that you tried.

In particular, we’re looking for an experienced, creative software engineer to join our dev team of 4. Our site is seen daily by tens of thousands of people around the world. Your contributions will be immediate and far-reaching. This isn’t the kind of gig where you’re handed a to-do list from a PM – you’ll help make the big decisions. You’ll not only be developing the code, you’ll also lead the dev team over the entire software lifecycle – analysis, design, implementation, QA, deployment, and maintenance. You’ll be a thought leader and driving force for coding standards, version control and project lifecycle/rollout.

Bottom line: do interesting work that directly impacts a ton of people in a big way, change the way creative work is bought and sold, get paid to do it and be happy. If this sounds like you, read on…

This is you:

• 2+ years experience building / maintaining Linux-based environments. • 3+ years leading a software team, utilizing modern web technologies. • 10+ years of experience with any of the following languages (Python, PHP, Java). • Intimate knowledge of a version control system (SVN, GIT, CVS). • Solid understanding of OOP fundamentals and design pattern concepts. • Solid understanding of algorithms and data structures. • A fundamental understanding of test-driven development. • An entrepreneurial heart, a sense of humor, and desire to see your work used by people around the world.

Some or all of these would be a big plus (we’d love you for sure):

• 1+ years of Django experience. • 2+ years experience managing an agile dev environment. • Database schema design and application architecture experience. • Experience with functional languages. • Experience with business intelligence software suites (such as Pentaho). • Understanding the power of concurrent programming languages. • Experience with Amazon S3 and Cloud Computing. • Solid knowledge of Javascript, CSS, AJAX. • Experience with open source audio manipulation tools. • Experience with MPEG 4, h.264, and open source video manipulation tools. • Prior participation and contribution in open source projects.

If you have most or all of the above, well – then we gotta have you.

Job Description and responsibilities:

crowdSPRING (www.crowdspring.com) is building the world’s best creative community, including graphic and industrial designers, photographers, and writers. We’ve been featured in Forbes, Wired, AdvertisingAge, Wall Street Journal, Fast Company, the Chicago Tribune, TechCrunch, Mashable, and elsewhere. We won WIRED’s Small Biz of 2008 competition, a Stevie Award in 2009 for best product/service and were a finalist for a 2009 Webby for community! In 20 months, we’ve attracted an awesome creative community – over 52,000 designers and writers from 170+ countries.

We’re not your typical startup dorks: after a rousing day of trying to get a javascript callback, delivering hundreds of thousands of creative assets efficiently and negotiating a consensus for the lunch order, we’re yoga instructors, aspiring writers and musicians, movie nuts, hockey fans and one of us even runs several music labels at night.

But during the day, the 9 of us (plus several part-timers) have made it our mission to change the way small businesses around the world buy creative work. Nearly 10,000 entrepreneurs and companies from over 72 countries have leveraged crowdSPRING’s creative community. We have big plans ahead of us, but we can’t do it alone. So we’ve humbly posted this ad looking for someone to come play with us.

What you’ll do:

• Lead the dev team over the entire software lifecycle – analysis, design, implementation, quality assurance, deployment, and maintenance. • Be a thought leader and driving force for coding standards, version control and project lifecycle/rollout. • Collaborate in making high-level, technology decisions, with a keen eye towards innovation. • Produce finished, polished, documented work in a short amount of time. • Stay up-to-date with technologies so you can suggest new coding practices, recommend architecture changes and help the team to optimize scalability and network efficiency. • Maintain our in-house dev environment (Ubuntu, Apache, MySQL, Python). • Oversee our production environment (hosted w/ Rackspace). • Get paid to do what you love.

This is crowdSPRING:

• Competitive compensation, including incentive and stock option plans, full benefits (health, vision, dental, vacation), and a 401(k) Investment Plan with matching contributions • A fast-paced, fun and creative environment with a sharp, motivated team and a great opportunity to learn, grow, and succeed. • Your choice of technologies and software – MacBook Pro or a PC • Aeron chairs (your butt will thank you) • Unlimited ping-pong, Rock Band and Pac-Man • Wear whatever you want.

Because we’re looking for incredibly smart, interesting people, and because we’re highly protective of the culture we’re building, this can be a pretty tough place to get into. That said, if you’ve got the smarts and the creativity (and you don’t plan on showing up to the interview in a suit), reach out to us. There’s some big things happening here right now – it’s an incredibly exciting time to be here.
